The Complete Beginner's Guide to Straight Razor Shaving

If you've ever watched someone glide a straight razor across their jaw and thought "I want to try that," you're not alone. Straight razor shaving gives you a closer shave than a cartridge razor, and a single blade can last years with proper care. It does come with a learning curve, and rushing it is how people end up with nicks.

This guide walks you through exactly what to do, step by step, for a safe and effective shave.

Step 1: Prep Your Skin

Good prep does half the work for you.

• Wash your face with warm water to soften your beard and open your pores.
• Apply a hot towel to your face for 1–2 minutes. This softens hair further and relaxes the skin.
• Work a quality shaving soap or cream into a rich lather using a brush. This lifts the hairs up and lubricates your skin so the blade glides instead of drags.

Step 2: Check Your Razor

Your razor needs to be sharp and ready to go.

• Make sure it's freshly stropped (the edge is aligned and polished). Strop it on leather for 20–30 passes before every shave.
• Hold it correctly: three fingers resting on the shank, your thumb bracing the blade, and your pinky on the tang for control and stability.

Step 3: Shave With the Grain First

This is your foundation pass, and it's the safest one.

• Use short, light strokes at roughly a 30° blade angle.
• Always shave in the direction your hair grows first. That's typically downward on the cheeks, but check your neck carefully since growth patterns often shift direction there.
• Rinse the blade after every couple of strokes to keep it cutting cleanly.

Beginner tip: Start with just your cheeks and jawline. Save the neck and tricky spots like under your nose for once you've built up some confidence and control.

Step 4: Go Across or Against the Grain (Optional)

Want an even closer shave? This step is optional and only for once you're comfortable with Step 3.

• Reapply a fresh layer of lather.
• Shave across the grain first. If your skin handles that well, you can lightly go against the grain for extra closeness.
• Don't rush this part. This is where most nicks happen for shavers who get overconfident.

If you're brand new, it's completely fine to skip this step for your first several shaves. A with-the-grain shave is already a big upgrade from a cartridge razor.

Step 5: Rinse and Cool Down

• Rinse your face thoroughly with cool water to close your pores.
• Apply a cold towel.
• Pat your skin dry,  don't rub it.

Step 6: Aftercare

• Apply an alcohol-free aftershave balm or splash to soothe your skin and disinfect any small nicks.
• If your skin is sensitive, avoid heavily fragranced products right after shaving — give your skin time to calm down first.

Step 7: Clean and Store Your Razor

Taking care of your razor after the shave is just as important as the shave itself.

• Rinse and dry the blade completely. Any leftover moisture will lead to rust.
• Strop it lightly if needed.
• Store it somewhere dry, ideally in a case or on a stand.

Straight razor shaving follows a consistent process: prep the skin, shave with the grain, cool down, and take care of the tools. Go slow, since rushing increases the risk of nicks, and use light pressure, letting the blade's sharpness do the work rather than pressing harder. Expect a learning curve; everyone nicks themselves the first few times, and it gets easier fast.
