The Belgian Coticule Whetstone is a natural sharpening stone quarried in the Ardennes region of Belgium since the 17th century. Formed over 480 million years ago, it is composed of fine volcanic ash and clay enriched with hard garnet crystals that deliver precise and efficient honing.

Each stone contains 30 to 42 percent garnets, naturally bonded by mica. These dodecahedron shaped crystals measure 5 to 15 microns in diameter and penetrate 1 to 3 microns into the blade surface, allowing for a fast yet ultra fine sharpening experience. The result is a polished, razor sharp edge with a smooth finish and no micro burrs.

Ideal for straight razors and fine edge tools, the Coticule is often compared to a 4,000 to 8,000 grit stone on the Japanese scale. Unlike synthetic stones, each Coticule is unique in composition and character due to its natural origin. It is particularly well suited for honing high carbon, stainless, Damascus, and HSS steel blades.
